Nova Bucs Opening Day Starter

Ivan Nova will be the Pirates’ Opening Day starting pitcher at Detroit March 29, but it’s unclear is he will remain with the team throughout the season.  Nova is owed $8.5 million in each of the next two seasons as part of a $26 million, three-year contract.

 

Bucs Acquire All-Star Dickerson

The Pittsburgh Pirates acquired All-Star outfielder Corey Dickerson from the Rays in exchange for pitcher Daniel Hudson, minor league infielder Tristan Gray and cash.  28-year-old Dickerson hit .282 with 27 homers, 33 doubles and 62 RBI for Tampa Bay last season.

 

Bucs Sign Outfielder

The Pirates signed free agent outfielder Michael Saunders to a minor league contract and invited him the spring training.  The 31-year-old was an All-Star in 2016 but batted just .202 last season.

 

Pirates Trade For Reliever

Left-hander Josh Smoker has been traded from the Mets to the Pirates for minor league lefty Daniel Zamora and cash.  Smoker went 1-2 with a 5.11 ERA and 68 strikeouts in 56 1/3 innings over 54 relief appearances last year.

 

Bucs Trade McCutchen

The Pirates traded 5-time All-Star Andrew McCutchen to the Giants for right-hander Kyle Crick, minor league outfielder Bryan Reynolds and $500,000 in international signing bonus allocation.  Pittsburgh also will send San Francisco cash to cover part of McCutchen’s $14.75 million salary.

 

Bucs Trade Cole

The World Series champion Houston Astros have boosted their rotation with another big arm, acquiring Gerrit Cole from the Pittsburgh Pirates.  The Bucs receive right-handers Joe Musgrove and Michael Feliz, third baseman Colin Moran and outfielder Jason Martin.

 

Bell Powers Bucs Past Birds

Josh Bell hit a two-run homer, Gregory Polanco also went deep as the Pirates completed a two-game interleague series sweep of the Orioles, 5-3.  The Bucs wrap up the season with a four-game series in Washington beginning tonight.  (11-14) Ivan Nova faces (5-6) Edwin Jackson.  Join the OVSN at 6:40 for the pregame.

 

Cutch 8 RBI Lead Bucs

Andrew McCutchen hit a grand slam and drove in eight to lead the Pirates past the Orioles 10-1.  McCutchens eight RBI is one off the franchise record and most by a Pirate since Jason Day in 2004.  Starter Trevor Williams struck out six, giving him 116 on the season, the most by a Pirates rookie since Paul Maholm in 2006.  The Bucs host the Birds again tonight.  (7-11) Chad Kuhl faces Gabriel Ynoa.  Join the OVSN at 6:40 for the pregame.
